Three residents delivered petitions with more than 1,100 signatures to Half Moon Bay City Hall on Thursday asking for a referendum on the 555 Kelly project for senior farmworker housing.
Hal Bogner, Steve Hyman and Chris Minoletti said the signatures, that were mostly collected by Dan Haggerty outside Safeway and at the weekly farmers market, exceed the number required for the question to qualify to be on the November ballot.
The Half Moon Bay planning commission and city council both allowed the project to move forward earlier this year after extensive discussion over the course of several meetings. While the commission was considering the issue, Gov. Gavin Newsom applied pressure for speedy approval.
The proposed ballot measure would ask voters whether or not they agree with the decision to allow construction of the new housing and services building on Kelly Avenue.
After accepting the petitions, representatives of the city have not yet indicated steps they will take to verify the signatures and qualify the question for the ballot.
