About ALAS:
ALAS has been using music to heal and unite the community through its cultural arts programming, including the ALAS Grupo Accordion Campo Media Luna and Ballet Folklórico Tonantzin y Mariachi Media Luna.
Dr. Hernandez Arriaga created the accordion program following the January 2023 mass shooting to offer music therapy to farmworkers who suffered trauma from the tragic incident. The folklórico group provides cultural enrichment to youth seeking to connect with their heritage and traditions.
Over the past several years, ALAS has worked tirelessly in the Half Moon Bay community to address the COVID-19 pandemic, disastrous floods and fires that displaced workers, and a deadly mass shooting in 2023.
ALAS has transformed pain into purpose and achievement by promoting social wellness through multicultural practices, mental healthcare, and actively supporting the education and work of local farmworkers. Recognizing these efforts, State Senator Josh Becker and Assemblyman Marc Berman, who both represent the San Mateo County coast, have selected Ayudando Latinos a Soñar as the 2023 Nonprofit of the Year in their districts.
“Although ALAS has been in existence for just over a decade, we have been so busy in the recent years that we haven’t had the chance to formally celebrate our ten-year anniversary. This year, we have the opportunity to celebrate with a Gran Gala that expresses our gratitude to the community with phenomenal live entertainment. Building ALAS over the past decade has been a labor of love, and we want to celebrate our achievements and the growth of our movement with this free event for community members,” said Dr. Belinda Hernandez Arriaga, ALAS Founder and Executive Director.
The Gran Gala is made possible by the generous sponsorship of Prosperos, the Prosperity Lab, Amigos de ALAS, and the Latino Community Foundation.
